Effect Of Virtual Reality On Upper Limb Functions Post Burn

Research Abstract

Burn is an injury cause destruction of skin and underling tissue. Post burns complications are severe. Contractures of upper extremity have a major effect than in lower extremity. Involvement of shoulder, elbow and hand has large impact on ADL such as bathing, dressing and toileting etc. Active video gaming is an emerging technology with the potential to overcome many of the current barriers to physical activity in children and adult . purpose: This study was conducted to determine the effect of virtual reality on upper functions post burns . Subjects: Thirty patients male and female with elbow burn participated in this study. Their ages ranged from 20 to 30 years old. They divided into two groups , control group which include 15 patients received traditional physical therapy program for upper limb for 8 weeks at a frequency of 3 sessions per week, and study group which include 15 patients received traditional physical therapy program for upper limb burn in addition to virtual reality program using Xbox for 8 weeks at a frequency of 3 sessions per week. Both groups were assessed pre and post treatment for elbow joint range of motion (ROM) by electrogoniometer and for functional activities by upper extremity functional index (UEFI). Results: There was significant deference between both groups as follow, There was a significant increase in the median values of ROM post treatment of study group compared with control group (p = 0.0001) and There was a significant increase in the median values of UEFI post treatment of study group compared with control group (p = 0.0001). Conclusion: it was concluded that virtual reality program using Xbox has significant effect on upper limb functions post burn. Key words: (virtual reality –upper limb burn– Xbox).
